Since the early days of Folsom Custom Skis, we’ve been fortunate enough to maintain a valuable relationship with Aspen Skiing Company. From the bulk orders we’ve built out for their executive side to the dozens of custom skis we build annually for Aspen Highlands Ski Patrol, we’ve always considered Aspen our home away from home. This year when their powerfully branded “Give A Flake” marketing campaign launched, we eagerly jumped at the opportunity to build another set of custom skis for our favorite resort.
In case you missed it, the Give A Flake campaign was rolled out in the Fall of 2018 as midterm elections and ski season were rapidly approaching. The messaging encouraged outdoor enthusiasts not only to vote, but to share their actions on social media to create a “join the movement” type effect. With climate change as a major initiative, Folsom was proud to stand behind Aspen’s campaign. “It made complete sense to team up with [Aspen] Ski Co. on this project”, said Folsom President Mike McCabe. “Our manufacturing process has been optimized over 10 years of custom ski building to be as sustainable as possible. From our local material sourcing to our FCS certified wood cores, we take a lot of pride in the low carbon footprint of our ski production here at Folsom.”
The custom Give A Flake skis we built were: 176 cm Completo (3 pairs), 165 cm Cash 106 (1 pair), 176 cm Cash 106 (1 pair), and 184 cm Cash 106 (1 pair). The skis were crafted with our signature demo construction consisting of a poplar and bamboo core blend, unidirectional carbon fiber stringers, and a triaxial fiberglass composite laminate. All of the skis were built with our Directional Rocker profile which puts an Aspen terrain focus on the two already versatile geometries.
Our ski bases are typically a straight black sintered Durasurf material for performance reasons, but as a full custom ski manufacturer, exceptions can be always be made. In this case, we dye-sublimated the Give A Flake design into clear base material and flood coated over the back of the print to give the skis custom topsheet and base graphics.
Keep an eye out for these skis across Aspen’s four mountains as well as on their social channels, there just might be a couple pairs being given away throughout the spring!
