Last year we brought you the the Spar 88, a new and improved version of our original carving ski, the Blue Note Carve. With a modernized geometry and improved tip and tail design, the Spar 88 skyrocketed in popularity and became our best selling ski of the 2018-19 season. Whether you loved your Spar 88’s, are an east coast carving aficionado, or are simply looking for a newer narrow option, you’re in luck. We’ve just put the final touches on our most precise ski offering to date, and are excited to introduce the latest addition to the Spar family: the all new Spar 78.
As the name would suggest, the new geometry stands stable at 78 mm underfoot, with a 122 mm tip width, and a 106 mm tail, making it the most competent hardpack ski we’ve ever designed. The shape is currently available in any length down to the centimeter from 175 to 184 cm, all of which give the Spar 78 a snappy 17 m radius.
“After testing our Spar 78, it is safe to say that this ski is the most precise frontside carver I have ever been on”, said Folsom President Mike McCabe. “We used an extra large stringer of uni-directional carbon through the tail of the skis which provides an unreal amount of load and release, resulting in a highly energized pop exiting the turn. The multi-radial tip and tail designs also allow this ski to have a large variety of turn shapes. Light edge pressure creates longer GS turns, while increased edge pressure bends the ski into a snappy slalom style turn shape.”
Folsom’s recommended build for the Spar 78 incorporates a poplar, maple, and bamboo core blend which reaps the benefits of all three of these organics. Six sheets of poplar allow the ski to feel dynamically energetic without sacrificing weight, two maple stringers keep the ski longitudinally and torsionally rigid, while a single piece of bamboo creates a quiet and damp ride, particularly at high speeds.
Lastly, our standard build on the Spar 78 carries with it our new and improved Directional Rocker profile for the ideal blend of stability and versatility. We’ve completely redesigned our tip and tail rocker shapes specifically for skis of this type to give you unparalleled confidence on hardpack as well as above average performance in moderately mixed snow conditions for a ski in this width range.
